What is Inclusion?

Inclusion is about respecting and appreciating everyone regardless of abilities, social status, age, gender, or ethnicity. It is about embracing everyone for who they are and accepting the diversity in everyone.

At some point in our life, we will probably feel the experience of being left out and I am sure that everyone who has experienced this will share the same opinion that IT SUCKS! It can also have a large impact on our mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

So why does it happen?

School is an incredibly social environment and therefore there are loads of opportunities for building a variety of relationships. Although everyone will have their own friends and friendship groups this does not necessarily mean they aren't alone or being left out. We all know how it would feel if we weren't being included so what can we do to ensure this doesn't happen.

At school and at clubs there are often opportunities for people to get left out, the most obvious sign is if you see someone standing on their own, sometimes they won't have anyone to pair up with, sometimes they won't be talking to anyone, maybe they seem a little upset. But remember not to be fooled, sometimes even the people who seem to be surrounded by friends might still be getting left out.

One of the easiest ways to be inclusive is to invite people to join you, include them in a game, ask them to join your group. Embrace everyone!! We talked earlier about different relationships, you don't have to be best friends with someone to include them in a conversation or in a game and sometimes you might find through this act you gain new friends and start building new friendships. We build relationships based on the values that people bring and everyone has something different to share.
